About Kranking™

Ultracapacitors, also called supercapacitors or electric double-layer capacitors, have been the subject of focused research and development efforts for the past two decades. This has been facilitated by remarkable advances in materials science and nanotechnology that allow the construction of stacks of thin inter-connected electrochemical cells with very high surface-area electrodes, and low Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR). These devices can be manufactured with capacitance values of several hundred Farads (and even several thousand Farads!), unimaginable in conventional capacitors. This translates into a new paradigm in energy storage, especially for short-duration, high-power applications. Depending on their design and construction, the specific power capacity (watts per kg) of ultracapacitors can be 10 to 100 times higher than that of most batteries!

The KranKing™ range of ultracapacitors have been specially designed for engine-cranking applications. They can greatly reduce the burden on lead-acid batteries during engine-starting (cranking), enabling a substantial reduction in the battery-size, and improved battery-life. Unlike batteries whose service life seldom exceeds 1000 cycles, KranKing™ devices have proven their performance for over 300,000 cycles, between -45°C to 55°C!! Thus, the overall reliability of the engine-cranking system can be greatly enhanced.

The capacity of batteries to deliver adequate current (at the specified voltage) to the starter motor during the engine starting process is determined by their state-of-health (SOH), state-of-charge (SOC) and the effect of temperature. But, even old depleted batteries (low SOH and low SOC) can provide the lower current sufficient for charging KranKingTM capacitors (in less than 30 secs.), which can then provide the short-duration current spike necessary for engine-cranking. The KranKingTM ultracapacitors can operate well over a wide temperature range, and ensure reliable engine-cranking even under extreme environmental conditions.
